A scene at the Aflao-Lome border

Since Monday, some hawkers in Aflao have been trooping to the border post in anticipation of the opening of the Togo side of the border in order to do brisk business in Lome.

As of Thursday, however, their hopes had not materialised.

Only pupils who commuted to school between Lome and Aflao and frontier residents who had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 were allowed to freely cross the border.

That, notwithstanding, a few of the hawkers were able to stretch their hands over the border to sell edible items to customers at the Togo side without crossing it.

Some of them told The Mirror that the opening of the border would definitely boost their livelihood, which invariably is cross-border trade.
