Junior Graphic: Speak good English

In last week's discussion, we looked at the correct way in which we arrange different adverbs after the verbs they modify or qualify.

We said adverbs are arranged (in order of closeness to the verbs they qualify) in this order: MANNER, PLACE and TIME, as in:

We lived PEACEFULLY (manner) THERE (place) FOR YEARS (time).

We also said when we have two adverbs of the same type: say two adverbs of time or two adverbs of place, to qualify the same verb, the more exact of the two should come closer to the verb.
Egs:

The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow (10 a.m. being more exact than tomorrow).

Daddy came home late yesterday (late being more exact than yesterday).

The matriculation takes place at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana (the Great Hall being more exact than the University of Ghana).

Let's meet at Mile 11 on the Adenta-Dodowa road (Mile 11 being more exact than the Adenta-Dodowa road).

From the examples given above, it should be obvious that sentences such as the following are incorrect:

The memorial service comers off next Sunday at 9 a.m.

We saw them along the Spintex road at the Flower Pot Junction.

My friend live at Haatso behind the GCB Bank.

They are incorrect because, in the first sentence, 9 a.m. is more exact than Sunday.

In the second sentence, the Flower Pot Junction is more exact than along the Spintex road, while in the third sentence, behind the GCB Bank is more exact than Haatso.

The correct sentences should be:

The memorial service comes off at 9 a.m. next Sunday.

We saw them at the Flower Pot Junction along the Spintex road.

My friend lives behind the GCB Bank at Haatso.
