Speak good English: Comparison of adjectives

Now we have seen how most adjectives form their comparative and superlative degrees and I hope we will all go by that when we have to do comparison of adjectives.

To recap what we have discussed so far, we said a few adjectives (good, bad, well, little, many, much) form their comparative and superlative degrees by using  different words altogether.

We also said almost all mono-syllabic adjectives (hot, sharp, dull, fine, dear, smart, weak, bold, plain, strong,  tall, etc.) form their comparative and superlative degrees by adding the letters -er and -est, respectively, to the positive degree.

For di-syllabic adjectives, while some (noisy, lazy, dirty,  heavy, simple, pretty, silly, etc.) form their comparative and superlative degrees by adding the letters -er and -est to the positive degree, others (foolish, handsome, famous,  stupid,  patient, decent, bizarre,  etc) form their comparative and superlative degrees by using the words more and most, respectively, as prefixes to the positive degree.

Then we also said almost all poly-syllabic adjectives (attractive, wonderful, beautiful, intelligent,  interesting, promising,  significant,  etc.) form their comparative and superlative degrees by using the words more and most as prefixes to the positive degree.

We must know that for an adjective such as lucky, which forms its comparative and superlative degrees by adding the letters -er and -est, respectively, to the positive degree, we cannot decide on our own to form the comparative and superlative degrees by using the words more and most, respectively,  with the positive degree.

In other words, the comparative and superlative degrees of lucky are luckier and luckiest, respectively, and can never be more lucky and most lucky.

In the same way,  the comparative and superlative degrees of decent are always more decent and most decent, never decenter and decentest.
