He indicated that teachers were crucial in the effort at protecting children from abuse and must, therefore, ensure that such cases received the needed attention by reporting them to the police.

Mr Sakyi was speaking at an educational and awareness programme organised by the unit, with sponsorship from the United Nations Agency for Population Activities (UNFPA), with support from the Central Regional Coordinating Council, at Ajumako recently.

He also advised teachers not to abuse children in any form, so that they (teachers) would have the moral right to report others suspected to have abused children.

Mr Sakyi urged parents and traditional authorities not to settle cases of sexual abuse at home, explaining that such cases were criminal and must be reported to the police.

The acting Central Regional Director of the Department of Gender, Mrs Thywill Kpe, said women and children had rights that must be protected at all times.

She called particularly on traditional rulers to support efforts to bring all perpetrators of sexual and gender-based violence to book.
