Provide emotional support to your children

The Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. George Oduro says parents must not provide only the physical needs of their children but also consciously work to ensure that their mental and emotional needs are catered for.

He said emotional needs such as love, affection, friendship, values, priorities and life commitments are essential in the development of children by parents.

Prof. Oduro also pointed out that the spiritual needs of children which include knowledge and maturity in spiritual matters help build trust, self-esteem, hope and joy, adding that they are important for every child.

He was speaking at the 52nd anniversary and Speech and Prize-giving Day of the University Primary School in Cape Coast.

The speech day was celebrated on the theme: "Parental Commitment: A Key Component of the Child's Education".

Prof. Oduro noted that decades of research in the area of family commitment had supported the fact that children who received enough attention from their parents have a much greater chance to develop into healthy, knowledgeable, responsible and caring adults.

He said, "without taking time to ensure that your child stabilises morally, spiritually and emotionally, your child's personality would be half developed”.

He commended all stakeholders of the school for their efforts in making the school one of the best in the country.

The Headteacher of the school, Mrs Georgina Aglobitse said the school was established in 1964 and has produced men and women of integrity who are contributing to the nation's development.

She said the school had worked over the years to improve its academic standards.

Students and teachers were awarded prizes for their performance and hard work.
