People taunt me because I’m dark

Dear Auntie Betty, I am dark in complexion and people call me all sorts of name because of my skin colour.

Please, what should I do?
Tilly.

Dear Tilly, I understand how difficult this must be for you, but you have to hold your head up high and love the colour of your skin because black is beautiful.

Do not allow anyone to make you feel inferior because of your skin colour. Whether black or white, all human beings are beautiful the way they are. People will say all manner of things even if you were not dark so you have to resolve not to listen to or be affected by their taunts.

Just brush off whatever names they call you and once they realise you are not affected by their taunts, it is likely they will stop. You could also let them know how proud you are to be black.

It is important to be confident and have a positive outlook about your skin colour and know that you are unique.

There are many advantages of having a dark skin. According to skin experts, dark skin is adaptable to sunlight and has increased quantity of a pigment called melanin.

The melanin and other factors serve as a “natural umbrella” and prevent harmful radiation from entering your skin. You are also less prone to sunburns and skin cancers.

So there are many reasons why you should love your skin colour and care less about other people’s opinion. Take good care of your skin and do not use skin lightening creams because of their harmful effects and other health problems they cause.

Be more than your outward appearance — be a good person, smile, be kind and nice to all you come into contact with.

All the best.
