The Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) has commended three schools for raising Gh¢ 202,000 to support the association.
The schools are Faith Montessori at Gbawe, British International School, East Legon and the Morning Star School at Cantonments. The schools contributed Gh¢18,000, Gh¢1,200 and Gh¢1000 respectively from the sale of Poppys.
The acting Public Relations Officer of VAG, Ex WO1 Bright Segbefia, said the schools raised the funds on the celebration of the Remembrance Day which fell on November 11, 2014.
The Remembrance Day is observed to recall the end of the hostilities of the world wars.
He said officials of VAG used the occasion to educate the pupils on Poppy Day.
Ex WO1 Segbefia said the management of Faith Montessori three years ago, voluntarily approached VAG to help raise funds during the period of the Poppy appeal and was happy to note that they were able to contribute GH¢3,000 that year, and another donation of Ghc4,000 the following year.
He said the school broke its own record by raising as much as GH¢18,000 this year alone.
The Executive Director of VAG, Col. Chris Afefa Oscar Nutakor (retd), who led the team to express appreciation to the Faith Montessori School, urged the pupils and students to continue to give freely to charity stressing that it was through charity that the well-being and future of veterans could be secured.
He inspected a guard impressively mounted by the school’s cadet corps and later fixed the Poppy on the breast pockets of some of the pupils and staff.
The Director of the School, Mr Gotfred Amoo and the Headmistress, Mrs Emma Ammo, assured the VAG of their continued support.
At the Morning Star School, the Director of the School, Nana Abena Kwakye and Nana Yaa Siriboe praised veterans for their sacrifices to the nation.
The VAG team entreated the pupils and students to be filled with the spirit of patriotism.
Ms Jane Commey, Mr William Darko and Ms Bertha Addo, teachers of the British International School (BIS) presented the money raised by the school on behalf of BIS to the VAG.
Col. Nutakor (retd) expressed the hope that other schools, corporate organisations, institutions and individuals will follow the shiny example of the pupils, students and their teachers to make life more bearable for veterans in the country.
