I failed BECE

BY: Junior Graphic

Dear Auntie Betty, I really need your advice because I am worried and cannot sleep.

I performed poorly in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), as my results are nothing to write home about. My best grade is 5, and so you can imagine the other grades I got. I had an overall aggregate of 35.

I am not happy and I feel my parents are also not happy with me. I cannot face them.

What should I do?

Ekow,
Takoradi.

Dear Ekow, I understand how you are feeling now. It is alright to feel down, be upset or worried sometimes. But you have to quickly put on a positive attitude and tell yourself that you can do it, and that things will turn around for good.

There is a saying: “Falling down does not make you a failure; staying down does.” Also, I am sure you are familiar with: “If at first you don’t succeed, try again.” So now you have to get up, shake off the disappointment and do the needful in order to get good grades next time around.

You’d have to rewrite the BECE. You need to get the foundation of your education right for a better future. I suggest you muster courage and talk to your parents. Although they may not be happy with your results, I believe they will understand and support you to do well.

So find an appropriate time and talk to them as soon as possible. Let them know how you feel and how you are willing and committed to getting good grades.

You have to identify the lapses and work towards improving them. Ask your parents if they can afford extra tuition for you. You also have to be committed to studying hard to make yourself and your parents proud. Solve many past BECE past questions.

The Junior Graphic is also a good resource to complement your studies. The ‘Rack your Brain’ column gives you Mathematics and Integrated Science questions and answers. There is also a column for English Language. These columns provide very useful information to help you throughout your life.

From now on, your focus should be studying hard to pass the BECE with flying colours. It is not going to be easy; and it is not impossible either. You can do it.

All the best.
