The Junior Graphic newspaper celebrated its 20th anniversary on Sunday, September 6, 2020. Parents, teachers and proprietress who are readers of the newspaper share their views on the Junior Graphic.

Mr Francis Grant Mensah, Teacher, University of Cape Coast Basic School

I think the introduction of the Junior Graphic was a step in the right direction. The first time I saw the newspaper on the newsstands, that was years ago ,  I was happy to see a children’s newspaper because I knew the paper would definitely help children  inculcate the habit of reading.

As a teacher who is in charge of the Junior Graphic Fan Club in my school, I have observed that  the pupils and students who write for the newspaper have improved their writing skills. That is very impressive.

I have also seen that students get excited to see their articles published. The paper has taught children so many things and through that, most of them are confident and assertive.

One thing I like about the Junior Graphic is how  it  is designed to meet the expectations of every child.

This is because each child has his or her favourite page. Some would go straight to the spread to look at school activities of their friends in other schools, others will look at  the lyrics at the back page. I believe  the

Auntie Betty page  seems to be the favourite of most students in the JHS.

I would use this opportunity to appeal to the management of the Graphic Communications Group Limited to use a full page for ‘Talk to Auntie Betty’ because as a teacher, I know very well that the Auntie Betty page has served as a counselling session for most schoolchildren and has helped to shape the lives of most of them to become responsible adults.

I also wish that more sponsors would come on board to support  the competitions organised by the paper to enable more schools to participate.

This is  because it is one avenue that has helped schoolchildren to improve their vocabulary and writing skills. Kudos to the Junior Graphic.

Mrs Anthoniette Acquah Sam, Teacher, Kwashieman ‘1’ JHS, Accra.

I have been actively involved in the distribution of the Junior Graphic to students in my school these past years.

One thing I have noticed is  that students who bought the paper  consistently, improved academically and performed excellently in the BECE.

The only problem I have observed over the years is, as a public school, some of the students, mostly girls, also work as house helps and they find it difficult to buy the paper to read due to financial constraint.

You can see that they are eager to read but they just cannot afford it.

So, I would use this opportunity to appeal to philanthropists to adopt most of the public schools across the country to supply them with copies of the Junior Graphic every week and I believe it would go a long way to help these children who want to read to broaden their horizon .

The content in the paper, I must say is excellent because the schoolchildren are given the opportunity to read about what is happening globally, challenge their minds with puzzles, and above all build their vocabulary with new words which are published every week.

I have been using some of the short stories as comprehension exercises for my students and the vocabulary as dictation and it has really helped them a lot.

The children are always amazed to see themselves in the spread and surprisingly, those who have the money usually pay in advance when they hear that they would be appearing in the Junior Graphic.

I think the Junior Graphic has really served the youth  because the impact is enormous. Long live the .

Mr Samuel Afari-Mensah, Headmaster, Floyd Albert’s Int. School, Asofan, Accra

Congratulations to the Junior Graphic team and Graphic Communications Group Limited for giving the Ghanaian child a voice.

The Junior Graphic has indeed become a saviour to our children because we are living in a world full of vices, and allowing the children to read  papers  meant for adults is not appropriate and could be disastrous.
I introduced the  paper in my school. As a headmaster, I have not regretted taking  that  decision because it has made a great impact on children.

What I have noticed is that  the content of the paper is tailored with  the curriculum of the Ghana Education Service (GES) so whatever they read helps them academically.

The ‘Speak Good English’ page is one of my favourites so I always encourage the teachers to use that page to set questions for the children to enable them  speak and write well.

My humble appeal to management is that  there should be a page for Information Technology (IT) to cater for children who have interest in that area  to study more.

In addition, the Auntie Betty page is helping the children but I  believe it would be prudent if an expert is brought on board to advise children  in specific areas.

Congrats once again to the Junior Graphic team, indeed, you have proven that you can serve the youth better.

Madam Abena Nketsia, Parent, Abeka, Accra,

Happy anniversary to the Junior Graphic. This educative newspaper has indeed come a long way and I have no doubt that the paper will continue to grow from strength to strength.

My daughter, Sharon Opoku Antwiwaa of the King and Queen Academy, started reading the newspaper when she was in the upper primary and till date, she still reads the paper.

One thing I can say for sure is that my daughter has improved tremendously in her Mathematics and English Language.

I remember I once asked why among the pages in the paper her favourite is the ‘Rack your Brain’ page.  Her response was: ‘I want to improve myself on these subjects’.

I thank God that my daughter’s effort has not been in vain. She has been scoring high marks in her examinations and I hope she will perform extremely well in the BECE she just wrote.

She was once featured in the spread of the paper and I was so excited to the extent that I called my relatives in and outside the country to inform them.

As a parent who has followed my daughter’s education, I think the greatest treasure we can give to our children is to encourage them to read wide.

I always ask myself what would have happened to my child if she could not read, how could  she even have read questions set for the examination to enable her to answer?

I thank the Junior Graphic team for serving the children of Ghana to become better persons.

Mrs Edith Gbekle, Proprietress, Early Bird School, Taifa, Accra

The Early Bird School and the Junior Graphic have worked together for 15 years.

It is a great privilege to share with readers of this well-esteemed newspaper the experiences and benefits that have been birthed out of this long-term relationship.

As a proprietress of a school, I think the introduction of the Junior Graphic has improved the literacy rate among schoolchildren.

Pupils and students usually get tired of the school syllabus because it seems every new level or class they enter is just an upgrade of what they had learnt in the previous class.

However, it has not been so with the Junior Graphic because each week, it presents  amazing stuff for the children.

The dynamic way of presenting the educational materials to pupils and students give them the opportunity to dig deep into the information  provided.

Our involvement with the Junior Graphic has put the Early Bird School high on the educational ladder.

The various competitions organised by the newspaper have given the school  the opportunity to actually show what the school is made of. I must confess the school owes most of its popularity to the Junior Graphic.

The ‘News around the World’ page helps the children to know what is happening around them and I think it is good because education is not only classroom work but extra information also make them well-rounded pupils and students.

The poems and letters pages have given the schoolchildren the opportunity to learn from their mistakes when their articles are published.

They keep improving on it as they always compare the articles they write to the published ones.

I say cheers to the Junior Graphic team on the celebration of a 20-year journey. This is just the beginning of greatness to come.
