Does mum love me?

BY: Hannah A Amoah

Dear Auntie Betty, I am 14 and in Form Two. My mother shouts at me every day when I make a little mistake.
When I close from school, I will not even rest and she will send me on errands. If I dare tell her that I am tired, I’ll be in trouble.
I do not know whether she loves me or not.
Please help me.
Confused Girl, Tamale.

Dear Confused Girl, There’s not a shred of doubt that your mum loves you. A mother’s love for her child is unconditional and that is what you should always bear in mind.
I believe she has not realised how her actions are affecting you so you need to have a mother-daughter chat with her. Find an appropriate time and talk to her in a polite manner. Let her know your concerns. If possible you could discuss how you feel with your dad and let him help you talk to your mum to address the issue.
People have different parenting styles and your mum may not have realised the negative impact her parenting style is having on you. However, I encourage you not to see running errands for your mum as punishment. You are also playing your role as a child in the upkeep and welfare of the family.
Additionally, running errands will equip you with life skills which will be beneficial to you in future so do not shy away from them. If for any reason, you are unable to run an errand at a particular time, talk to your mum and if possible, reschedule another time for it. I am sure she will understand.
All the best.
