The Children’s Library and an exhibition hall of the Accra Main Library have been refurbished and handed over to the Ghana Library Authority.
The exercise represents the second phase of renovation works on the Accra Library, following a report in the media about the poor state of the country’s main library.
The repair works, which cost over GH¢500,000, comprised some colourful and insightful paintings of the Children's Library, provision of metal grills, shelves and new furniture. It was funded by Huawei Technologies Ghana
There was also a complete replacement of the main entrance doors with secure burglar-proof gates, as well as the polishing of the floors.
The Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Ghana, Mr Russell Xu, said the company was committed to contributing significantly to the development of the communities and people in the region in which they operated.
“Huawei considers corporate social responsibility as part of its operations and has over the years invested significantly in various initiatives,” he said.
For her part, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mrs Sun Baohong, lauded Huawei for its efforts and urged other Chinese companies operating in the country to emulate such commitment.
The Deputy Minister of Communications, Mr Ato Sarpong, said Huawei Technologies had been a relevant contributor to the development of information, communication and technology in the country.
He, therefore, expressed the hope that such collaborations between the company and Ghana would continue to flourish.
He also advised the youth, especially schoolchildren, to take advantage of the opportunities provided them in order to contribute their quota to society.
The Head of External Affairs of Vodafone, Mr Gayheart Mensah, said his company was pleased to collaborate with Huawei Technologies and added that Vodafone had supported Huawei with 20 computers to furnish the Children’s Library of the Accra Main Library.
The Executive Director of the Ghana Library Authority (GLA), Mr Kwaku Ofosu-Tenkorang, commended Huawei and urged other companies to come to their aid in order to provide a conducive environment for children to study and interact with one another.
