Schoolchildren of the Morning Glory MCDC at Teshie-Nungua in Accra have been advised to be security conscious and report suspicious characters to their parents and teachers.
The Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Effia Tenge, gave the advice when she addressed the children during the Career Day celebration of the school.
The celebration was organised by the management of the school to assist the pupils in choosing careers worth pursuing in future.
In choosing policing as a career, ASP Tenge said: “The decision to become a police officer must first begin with you and it is that passion that will guide you into becoming an outstanding law enforcement officer to serve the nation even at your peril.”
Interacting with pupils of the Nursery Department who are aged between two and four, ASP Tenge took them through the core mandate of the Ghana Police Service and how they could be security conscious as children.
She said the core mandate of the police included maintaining law and order, protecting life and property, preventing and detecting crime, apprehending and prosecuting offenders, among others.
ASP Tenge advised the children to memorise the police emergency numbers 191 and 18555 and call the police in times of distress.
She cautioned the children to desist from abusing the lines as it might prevent the police from responding to the distress calls of other people who might need help.
