Auntie Betty: I’ve lost mum’s trust

Dear Auntie Betty, I am 14 years and in junior high school Form Two.

I once did something my mom did not like. I apologised to her but unknowingly, she has not forgiven me although she has been treating me like there is no problem.

Some time ago, one of my relatives brought me money in school and I kept it in my bag. A friend made a comment about that and later stole the money.

I went home sad and shocked about the stolen money. When I told my mum about it she said I had given the money to a boy.

What can I do to regain her trust?

Worried Girl,

Kumasi.

Dear Worried Girl, You did not state exactly what you did to lose your mum’s trust. I suggest you have a mum-daughter chat and tell your mum how you feel. For all you know, she may not have realised that she is doing something that is making you worried. If you talk to her and she tells you what you did wrong, acknowledge your mistake and apologise; be polite and truthful when you have this chat. Your mum should be your best friend and she is someone you can confide in so tell her the truth about whatever incident for which you think she has not forgiven you.

Trust is very important in any relationship. Let her know you want to gain her trust which is essential for your relationship with her and that also helps build your confidence. It is also a form of assurance to you that you can always go to her for advice and support.

I believe your mum will understand and change her attitude towards you. Bear in mind that your mum loves you and will not hold anything against you. She wants you to be a better person and a responsible adult in the future. Make sure you do not repeat what you did in order to lose your mum’s trust.

For you to gain your mum’s trust, you have to be honest, and respectful, and not hide anything from her. It is important to build a strong bond with your mum so that you can be open with her. Let your actions show that you are committed to regaining her trust.

All the best.
