Accra Academy has won the maiden edition of a poetry competition held at the W.E.B Du Bois Centre in Accra.
This was after the school had defeated the Presbyterian Senior High School, La; the St Margaret Mary Senior High School, Holy Trinity Cathedral Senior High School (HOTCASS), Garrison Methodist Technical/Vocational School, Anglican Senior High School and Kinbu Senior High School.
The competition was organised by Asembi House Production for some selected senior high schools (SHS) in the country to mobilise the youth to fight against the destructive impact of HIV and AIDS on young adults.
The competition was in four stages. The first stage was for poetry recitals, the second stage was called ‘Words from the people,’ which gave students the opportunity to express their views on HIV and AIDS.
The third stage was termed ‘Letter to the President’ and this allowed the students to write down their worries and concerns to the President while the fourth stage was a debate contest on HIV/AIDS.
The Event Coordinator, Mr Jonas Abbey, in an interview with the Junior Graphic said the winners of the competition, Accra Academy, would take home GH¢150 in addition to other souvenirs, PRESEC La and St Margaret Mary SHS which placed second and third respectively also received GH¢100 each and other souvenirs.
The acting Executive Director of the W.E.B Du Bois, Memorial Centre for Pan African Culture, Mr Binyameen Keelson said the future was in the hands of the youth and therefore there was the need for them to explore to come up with new ideas to develop their country.
“You need to think about innovative ways to help better your lives and move the continent forward,” he stated.
