A narrow escape

One vacation, my friend, Angela and I, were at the book fair just looking round and having fun.

We had saved money towards it and could, therefore, afford some savories and ice cream as we went round the various stands to look for the books we wanted.

Apart from the course books our parents gave us money for, we had extra money to buy other novels. After buying all our text books, we decided to visit the novel stands to select a few titles from renowned novelist like John Grisham, Sidney Sheldon and Daniel Steel.

As we checked them out, two guys came to join us and we later found ourselves discussing the novels of some of our favourite writers.

They later suggested we went to the snack stand for some pop corn and drinks.

We got to know their names as Kelvin and Melvin and that they were fraternal twins. After wearing ourselves out with conversation, Angela and Mervin to sit elsewhere to talk.

I also left Kelvin and looked around some more.

I felt uneasy about Angela and Melvin alone but I trusted her because he always seemed to have a grip on things so I knew she would be fine.

I waited till I got tired of waiting so I started reading a book I had just bought. When Ange,  as I call her came back, she was smiling from ear to ear.

she said that Kelvin wanted to know about me - my school, what I enjoyed doing and whether I would like him or not. I was flattered to be recognized by this handsome boy.

She went on to say that Kelvin said he would be coming around so that we could talk more.

Truly we saw the twins coming towards us and Ange signaled for me to follow Kelvin to a cool place so we could talk alone.

We went into one of the summer huts and had a great time. He was very humourous and made laugh till I could laugh no more. He later bought me a novel.

I was 17 and he was 21 and it seemed so right. We were lost in our own world and I forgot about Angela who was also having a good time in a corner with Melvin.

Kelvin later brought two cups of strawberry ice creams and gave me one. He said something that was really funny so I was laughing and didn’t pay attention to the ice cream which was melting and dripping on the floor until he promoted me to eat it. I was happy indeed.

Suddenly, I felt I should check on Angela since she and Melvin were nowhere to be found. I excused myself from Kelvin and got up. When I went to where Angela was, I saw that the carrier bag which contained the books she had bought on the chair but she was not there.

I then realised I should check the washroom and there was Angela! She couldn’t even move, she was so helpless. Something was wrong but I couldn’t figure out what was wrong.

I started shouting for help and an elderly woman came. She explained that she saw a boy carrying her towards the male washroom and when she enquired, he left her at the entrance of the women's washroom floor and fled.

Auntie Maggie, as I learnt her name later was an exhibitor at the fair and she helped me take Ange outside; she even hired a taxi for us.

When we got to Ange’s house, her parents weren’t around so elder sister, a nurse attended to her while I looked on anxiously.

Her sister later explained that Ange had drunk some juice which was laced drugs and that was why she was behaving like that. She said she would be fine.

When I got home I realised the twin boys planned to do that to both of us except that I had not eaten my ice cream. My only luck was I was too excited to take it because I like ice cream with a passion.

I looked so worried and worn out about Ange but I dared not mention it to anyone in my household. I would have been skinned alive.

In the evening, Angela and her sister came to my house and she advised us to stay away from strangers as we could have been easily raped.

I was so glad nothing happened to us, I thought we were going to experience love at first sight but it was just a mirage.
