At a White House press conference, Mr Obama said he has never seen any US presidential candidate try to discredit a poll before it has even taken place.
"I'd advise Mr Trump to quit whining," Mr Obama added.
The Republican presidential candidate has repeatedly claimed the 8 November election will be stolen.
"Mr Trump's continued flattery of Mr Putin and the degree to which he appears to model much of his policies and approach to politics on Mr Putin is unprecedented," Mr Obama said at Tuesday's Rose Garden news conference, alongside visiting Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.
