Colonel Mamadou Ndala, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Army Commander has on Thursday been killed in an ambush in North Kivu province.
Congo government spokesperson Lambert Mende has said Mamadou died of injuries after a rocket attack on his vehicle near the village of Mazizi in North Kivu.
He was killed along with three other soldiers who were in the vehicle with him.
Mamadou was the colonel in charge of military operations against rebels in eastern DRC and he helped to secure the military defeat of the M23 rebel group in November.
The colonel was killed along with three other soldiers “Colonel Mamadou Ndala has just passed away,” Mende told Reuters via telephone means.
“We have not yet identified the attackers,” he added.
Other sources told Reuters that Col Mamadou was returning from Beni airport without a military escort.
