A parliamentarian in Kenya, Joseph Mburu Kahangara has been charged with multiple traffic offences and assaulting a police officer.
The MP for Lari has denied driving dangerously and overtaking vehicles on Murang’a Road, Nairobi, on December 6, and denied yet another charge of failing to produce a driver’s licence.
The prosecution alleged that he failed to stop after a traffic police officer flagged him down, causing unnecessary obstruction against the smooth flow of traffic.
He was arrested and detained at the Central Police Station in Nairobi following a complaint that he had assaulted a police officer.
The MP will be tried for allegedly assaulting the police officer who attempted to seize his car keys. He was granted bond and ordered to stand trial on February 14 and March 17.
He had moved to the High Court after a magistrate declined to release him on bond pending investigations and instead allowed police to detain him for four days.
