Kenya: Uhuru orders Sh4bn set aside for security

President Uhuru Kenyatta making his speech during Labour Day celebration at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park on May 1, 2013. Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed that Sh4 billion be set aside annually starting this financial year for the purchase of equipment to boost security in the country.


He noted the rising incidences of crime in the country and said a special team with officials from Treasury, Police and the Office of the President would be formed to address the situation.

He was speaking at his Harambee House office on Tuesday after Inspector-General David Kimaiyo briefed him on the security situation in the country.

President Uhuru said the number of police officers in the country will be increased.

He also decried the rising incidences of road accidents, especially those involving boda boda motorcycle riders and ordered that traffic police ensure regulations and laws are observed.

The office of the Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet are to work closely with Ministry of Transport to ensure the boda boda sector is managed well.

During a separate meeting, President Kenyatta was briefed on the status of the budget by the Treasury team where he directed the team to plan a program that ensures competitiveness of the Kenyan economy.

He reiterated the need to explore how the country can start generating energy from coal, saying it will be affordable and reliable hence bring down the cost of doing business in the country.

During the briefing, the Treasury team assured the President that money for the laptop program, Youth and Women Enterprise Funds, free maternity and putting one million acres under irrigation has been factored in the budget.
