Kenya: Security forces take control of besieged mall

Smoke billows from the mall area on Monday.Kenyan authorities say they have arrested 10 suspected terrorists among attackers of the Westgate Mall in Nairobi that has so far claimed the lives of 62 people.

Monitored media reports say three terrorists have also been killed.

Gunfire echoes from the mall area despite government claims that its forces are in control, and the Interior Ministry says several people suspected of involvement in the attack have been arrested at Jomo Kenyata International Airport for questioning.

The Kenyan authorities have also revised the death toll down to 62 from the earlier 69, with the Red Cross saying some bodies had been double-counted. As many as 175 people have been hospitalised and more than 1,000 rescued.

Among those killed in the Saturday attack was Ghanaian author, poet, teacher and politician, Professor Kofi Awoonor, 78. Several other foreign nationals also lost their lives in the attack claimed by terror group Al-Shabaab who want Kenya to withdraw its troops from Somalia.

Kenya says the attack would not change anything.
