In defence of Akando

The last time that it occurred at a parliamentary vetting, when an appointee being vetted for a deputy minister position at the Ministry of Trade explained EPA as Environmental Protection Agency instead of Economic Partnership Agreement, I said sometimes we needed to laugh at ourselves. I will say the same with the nominee for the Ministry of Defence who was unable to account for any rank in the military. After all, as he said, he would learn when he assumed office.

But that reminded me of an incident in Tamale way back in 1983, when an officer who rose to the top in the Ghana Armed Forces, then a Lt Colonel, came to the Graphic office and left a message with a secretary for me. While the secretary was recounting the message, she said the Lieutenant came and left a message for me. Unfortunately, then Lt Col Nguah, heard the statement and climbed up to jokingly protest his demotion from a Lt Col to a Lt. That can be the albatross of the deputy minister if he is confirmed and
