When city authorities sleep…
There is a worrying trend within the city, captured by my roving lens a few days ago. From Adenta through the Aviation Road to East Legon and finally to Adabraka, it is so obvious that some city authorities are reneging on their responsibilities to protect public property.
A disturbing phenomenon has to do with the refusal of road contractors to restore the pavements they dig to mount streetlights to their original state.

This is common in many places, including the Kanda Highway, one of the major roads that lead to the private residence of our own President.
We clamour for development including good roads, pavements and drains. Unfortunately, when our taxes are used for these, we, including city authorities, look on while some irresponsible contractors destroy them.
Sitting aloof
In recent times, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Henry Quartey, has taken it upon himself to ‘Make Accra Work Again,’ something that the city authorities should have been doing long before the minister was appointed.
The minister through his actions, has exposed the assemblies because, under their noses, indiscipline thrives to the point that the beauty of jurisdictions under their care are being destroyed.
The excuse that people are just recalcitrant and would not want to do the right thing is a manifestation of their failures.
We cannot go cup in hand begging for grants for infrastructure projects only for the assemblies to sit hopelessly watching the destruction of same.
My fervent hope is that the contractors will be compelled to fix without delay, the pavement blocks they have removed and made to tidy where they have worked. They should be made to restore whatever they destroy.
We want discipline and actions that build the country and not those that contribute to its destruction.
