Pull these death traps down

Pull these death traps down

I would like to draw the attention of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, the Ghana Highway Authority, National Road Safety Commission, among others, to a looming danger which they either have overlooked or to put it bluntly, have not awaken their conscience.

I am referring to the sprawling wooden storey structures dotted along the Sakumono Beach on the Tema-Nungua road where revellers patronise, especially at night on weekends and public holidays.

Admittedly, I am no expert, however, a cursory look at the said structures, its sheer sizes, quality of the wood, its mounting, joints, use and  weight, among others, show that its structural integrity are in serious doubt.

It is again very doubtful if these agencies took any interest in  the construction of these structures.

Given the number of revellers who patronise these structures, I must say, it is a disaster in the waiting.

Another worrying phenomenon is the closeness of these facilities to the main Tema-Nungua road, making it possible for revellers to stray unto the road.

Also these revellers may not “be themselves” at these hours.

One may ask, what has happened to the Ghana Highways Authority Act which states clearly the permissible distance of structures from roads?

I believe there are persons whose responsibilities are to ensure that these  structures do not spring up in the first place and if they should, the right regulatory frame work  must be instituted to avert any nasty incidents or accidents.

I want to emphasise  that they owe a legal duty to the tax payer who chooses to spend time there.

I recall with great nostalgia when some years back, a building Inspector from the “Council” could visit building sites to inspect materials before they are used for construction.

These laws have not been repealed and still sit in our statutory books. I would like to entreat the regulatory bodies to live up to their mandate.
