Vlisco Women’s Month launched

It was an atmosphere dominated by rolls and rolls of colourful fabric,  broad smiles and warm comments about women when this year’s Vlisco Women’s Month campaign was  launched last Thursday night in the Vlisco shop at the Accra Mall.

The  campaign is a platform by the well-known fabric manufacturing outfit to celebrate and honour the outstanding achievements of women in West and Central Africa.

It does so by identifying and rewarding women who pursue  and live their  dreams and by doing so, inspire others to realise their dreams too.

One woman in each of the participating countries becomes the brand ambassador for Vlisco for a year.

In Ghana, the brand ambassador for 2014 will be chosen from a field of three beautiful, hardworking young women.

They are  Ayesha Bedwei,  a tax expert at the Pricewaterhouse Coopers accountancy firm; Eugenia Tachie-Menson, a social entrepreneau and CEO of the Young Educators Foundation which organises the Scripps Spelling Bee contest for schoolchildren  and  Anita Erskine-Amaito, a television personality and CEO of Brand Woman Africa.

Rudolf van Gompel, Executive Retail Director of the Vlisco Group, spoke at the launch ceremony and said  that apart from Ghana, Vlisco was organising Women’s Month celebrations in Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo and Ivory Coast as well.

“At Vlisco, women are integral to all we do. We believe in empowering men, not only to look beautiful and elegant  but also to pursue their dreams, no matter how big or small they may be, ” the Vlisco executive said.

The public will be called upon to vote for their favourite among the three nominees.  The one with the highest votes will be declared winner of the 2014 Vlisco Women’s Month campaign.

She will be revealed and crowned during the awards night on April 5 at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra.

As a Vlisco brand Ambassador, she will represent the brand and Vlisco  at various events and fora. She will have the chance to visit the home of Vlisco in the Netherlands and meet with colleague ambassadors from the other participating counties.

Last year’s brand ambassador, Mrs Ellen Hagan, was at the launch at the Accra Mall and spoke of her delight in being made the Vlisco ambassador for 2013.

The Vlisco Women’s Month campaign takes its origins from the International Women’s Day which is celebrated on March 8 worldwide every year.

According to Rudolf van Gompel, Vlisco felt that setting aside just one day to celebrate women was not enough. So the company decided to dedicate the entire month of March to celebrate women.

The event to announce who becomes the Vlisco brand ambassador for 2014  will be held on April 5 at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra.
