Science is a lifestyle, not a perception - Dr. Ofosu
Research scientist with the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), Dr. Daniel Osei Ofosu, has demonstrated that Science is a fundamental aspect of our lifestyle that promotes peace both at home and on a global scale.
Commenting on the International Week of Science and Peace celebrated every year during the week in which November 11 falls, Dr. Ofosu emphasized that, although Science surrounds us, we often fail to recognize its pervasive influence.
"From the moment we wake up to the time we go to bed, we use Science, we walk through Science, and we communicate Science. Making the general public understand that Science is a part of our lifestyle involves transcending the traditional perception of Science as an academic discipline and pointing to it in the fabric of daily life. Scientists, like myself, need to emphasize that Science is not confined to laboratories or academic institutions," Dr. Ofosu stressed.
He added that scientists and educators must convey complex concepts in accessible ways, bridging the gap between academic jargon and practical relevance. By demystifying Science and presenting it as a source of solutions to everyday challenges, we pave the way for a society where scientific literacy is not just a theoretical pursuit but an integral part of how we approach and enrich our lives.
On the topic of Science and peace, Dr. Ofosu mentioned that Science, at its core, serves as a catalyst for peace by fostering understanding, tolerance, and collaboration. At home, scientific principles contribute to sustainable living practices, where energy-efficient technologies, waste reduction strategies, or advancements in healthcare play a crucial role. By embracing these innovations, households can minimize environmental impact and enhance overall well-being, laying the groundwork for harmonious living.
According to the brain behind "Your Daily Science Fact," in the community and on a global scale, Science plays a pivotal role in addressing shared challenges. Collaborative scientific endeavours transcend borders, fostering international cooperation on issues such as climate change, pandemics, and resource management.
Dr. Ofosu concluded that through scientific diplomacy and the exchange of knowledge, communities worldwide can work together to build a more peaceful and resilient world, grounded in a shared commitment to the betterment of humanity.
Since 2018, Dr. Daniel Osei Ofosu, through his "Your Daily Science Fact," has shared Science facts in clear, concise, and easy-to-understand language to draw attention to Science all around us. The feedback has been amazing so far and serves as a source of motivation to continue churning out these facts for the public to realize Science in our everyday lives.
