MIME Africa Awards launched in Accra

A new awards scheme, Merits in Movies And Entertainment (MIME) Africa Awards was launched at the Holiday Inn in Accra last Saturday, May 29.

MIME Africa seeks to reward excellence, innovation, skill and quality in movies, entertainment and sports in Africa starting with Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa.

The event was officially launched by Anthony Bart, CEO of The Bridge Zone supported by founder and CEO of the scheme Eunice Asiedu. There was a brief but impressive performance by Gospel musician Cwesi Oteng.

In her remarks Eunice Asiedu said she was elated that her brainchild was finally seeing the light of day. “At the end of the day, what we hope to achieve is that MIME Africa will be a major reference point in rewarding the best in Africa. We are starting with Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa and as the years go by, we will add on other African countries.

“This first edition will be held in Ghana at a soon-to-be-announced date while the subsequent editions will move to other African countries,” she said.

According to Eunice Asiedu, there will be a special award for the most fashionable patron at the event.

Members of the jury for MIME Africa are music producer, Fred Kyei Mensah; filmmaker, Ivan Quashigah; radio presenter and organiser of the Ghana DJ Awards, Merqury Quaye; film director Pascal Amanfo; musician Reggie Rockstone and actress Akofa Edjeani.

Some of the categories for the scheme are Best Movie of the Year, TV Show of the Year, Best Performance in a Movie, Best Performance in a TV Show, Breakthrough Performance of the Year and Director of the Year.

Others are Film Production Company of the Year, Best Light Design, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Sports Media Personality of the Year, The Most Outstanding Sports Media Personality of the Year and Sports Media of the Year.

In the music categories there are Male Act of the Year, Female Act of the Year, Best New Act of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Music Media of the Year, Music Executive of the Year, Best Ghanaian International Act of the Year and Music Video of the Year.

Under general entertainment, the categories are Breakthrough Social Star, Breakthrough Social Star (Diaspora), Event of the Year, Best Host and MIME Personality of the Year.
