Accra Academy wins Vodafone Icons

It was an exciting day for the young and gallant “Bleoo” boys when they beat five other schools to clinch the title as first winners of the Vodafone Icons High School Edition last Tuesday.

The finals, which came off at the Accra International Conference Centre, had Osei Tutu, Christian Methodist, Adisadel College, Presec Legon, and Opoku Ware Senior High Schools competing for the ultimate prize.

For their prize package as winners, Accra Academy won the coverted music studio and would represent Ghana at the Global Vodafone High School competition in Turkey next year.

Osei Tutu Senior High School from the Ashanti region and Adisadel College, Cape Coast, placed second and third respectively.

There were other awards for individual performers as well. Isaac Nyamekye of Christian Methodist won the Best Male Vocalist Award while the Best Instrumentalist Award was given to Yaw Obeng of Osei Tutu Senior High School. Okuapeman Secondary School from the Eastern Region walked home with the Overall Excellence Award in the competition.

The competitive finals saw Okuapeman Senior High School, Presec Legon and Opoku Ware being evicted at the first stage. The next stage of the competition saw “serious” performances from the finalists but, perhaps, the style of the “Bleoo” Boys made them stand out from their competitors.

Their rendition of Asa’s Jailer was awesome but that was not the motivating factor for their victory. Their slavery style of dressing and energetic stagecraft earned them thunderous applause from the audience and judges made up of Miss Naa, Anita Erskine and Cwesi Oteng.

This year’s Vodafone Icons High School Edition started in September and saw many Senior High Schools from all over the country audition for the competition.
