We expect no awards

The hiplife duo of the moment, R2Bees, appear to be still smarting from the disqualification of their 2011 hit song Agyeii  from last year’s  Vodafone Ghana Music Awards nominations for its lewd lyrics.

Despite having the highest nominations in this year’s awards  R2Bees say they are not expecting any award this year. “It may be every musician’s dream to win an award but we are not expecting anything.

“We have had issues with the organisers of Ghana Music Awards in previous years so despite us having the highest nominations this year we are not looking forward to winning anything” the duo, Rashid Mugeez and Faisal Hakeem told Showbiz last weekend.

They also said that this year is not the first that they have earned many nominations in the awards but their past experiences tell them that a musician can be nominated in various categories and yet win nothing in the end.

Making a comment on the disqualification of Agyeii  in last year’s awards, R2Bees said, “There were a lot of profane songs like The Thing by Atumpan which Charterhouse didn’t see anything wrong with but had issues with Agyeii which should tell you that there is favoritism as to whose song should win an award and whose shouldn’t”.

R2Bees said it is Ghanaians who will speak for them whether they really deserve an award or not.  “We are not bluffing but Ghanaians over the years know what we are capable of, so whether we win an award or not we would still do good music.

Asked whether they would refuse the award should they win any, the duo who have been nominated in the Artiste of the Year, Song of the Year, Hip Life song of the Year, Hip Life/Hip Hop Song of the Year, High Life Song of the Year, Best Male Vocal Performance and Songwriter of the Year categories said they would gladly accept the award should it be announced that they have won in any of the categories.

According to them, “we won’t reject any award if it is announced that we have won but in case we don’t win anything we will not be disappointed at all because we are not really expecting anything”

R2Bees who started their music career in 2006 have many hit songs including Up Inna De Klub, I Dey Mad Oh, Yawa Girl, Odo, Walaahi, Bayla  and  Kiss Your Hand.

They recently launched their second album Refuse To Be Broke  which featured musicians like Sherifa, WizKid, Sarkodie, Davido, Tinchystryder and Voicemail from Jamaica.
