UG qualify for Hult Prize finals

'Team Anchor’, the  moniker for the winning team from University of Ghana, Legon at this year’s Hult Prize, has advanced to the finals of the competition scheduled for the United States in September 29.

The competition, which was hosted in five different cities—London, Dubai, Shanghai, San Francisco and Boston, saw brilliant minds come together to solve some of the world’s pressing challenges. 

The Ghanaian team won the Dubai regionals held on March 11 and. It is made up of Louisa Ofosuah Obimpeh, Benardine Holdbrook Ghanson, Anna Agyirwa Aggrey and Paulina Nyamekye.

Hult Prize, an innovative crowd-sourcing platform identifies and launches disruptive and catalytic social ventures that aim to solve the planet’s most pressing challenges. 

This year, the 7th Hult Prize partnered with the Clinton Global Initiative is focused around finding solutions for “Crowded Urban Spaces”– a challenge selected by President Bill Clinton. 

Team Anchor’ solution is to double the income of people living in crowded urban spaces by reducing their living expenditure.

Leader of Team Anchor, Louisa Ofosuah Obimpeh, in an interview with Showbiz said they have been preparing feverishly for the grand finale slated for September this year. 

"Currently, we are gathering information, data and works that have been done concerning the project. 

“We have also been meeting experts and we hope that by the time we are ready to go for the finals, we would be fully prepared.

"Ghanaians should continue praying and supporting us, in every way that they can," she added.

On his part, Frank Agyapong, Campus Director of Hult Prize at the University of Ghana Legon said "I believe they have come up with a good idea which will impact million of lives and we call on all stakeholders to help make this possible.”

The final round of the competition will be hosted at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in September, where one team will be selected as the Hult Prize recipient. President Bill Clinton will award the $1,000,000 prize to the winning team.

Started in 2009, the Hult Prize is the world’s largest student competition and crowd-sourcing platform for social good, named one of the top five ideas changing the world by President Bill Clinton and TIME Magazine, and has been funded by the Hult family since its inception.
