Miss Universe 2017, Ruth Quashie, made Ghana proud when she placed in the last 16 of the Miss Universe world finals in the United States last Saturday.

Miss Quashie was selected from the Africa and Asia zone to join 15 other contestants at the event held at The AXIS, Las Vegas.

The 23-year-old however failed to make it to the Top 10. Hers is the best performance Ghana has had at the Miss Universe finals in recent times after Akuba Cudjoe made the Top 10 in 1999. Ghana’s contestant in 2006, Angela Asare, won Miss Congeniality.

Ruth Quashie is a graduate of the University of Ghana Business School.

Speaking to the media on her arrival at the Kotoka International Airport, she said the Miss Universe platform had given her the opportunity to market Ghana’s tourism to the world.

The 66th Miss Universe pageant was hosted by Steve Harvey and Ashely Graham. Contestants from 92 countries and territories participated in this year’s pageant, surpassing the previous record of 89 contestants.

Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was crowned winner. She succeeds France’s Iris Mittenaere.

The Miss Universe pageant is one of the three most popular annual beauty pageants worldwide and is run by the Miss Universe Organisation.

The contest was created by clothing company, Pacific Mills in 1952 in the United States.
