Bisa Kdei

Hitmakers who don’t rock the stage

They make catchy songs that people cannot help dancing to or singing along at parties, weddings, funerals and other social events but their stage performances are often nothing to write home about.

These artistes include Adane Best, Kofi B, Bisa Kdei, Oheneba Kissi, Ben Brako, R2Bees, Ofori Amponsah, Daasebre Gyamena, Noble Nketiah, D-Black, Lucky Mensah and Nana Tuffour.

On the contrary, there are others like, Amakye Dede, Okyeame Kwame, Stonebwoy, Afro Moses, Samini, Sarkodie, No Tribe, Wiyaala, Kojo Antwi, MzVee, VVIP, Shatta Wale, Mzbel 4X4, Kwaw Kese, Efya and more who always bring the thrill to audiences.

Since music lovers are usually already familiar with the songs to be presented by an artiste, they expect the performer to have the capability to sustain their interest with a well-planned act.

Audiences also expect effective interaction initiated by the ariste that would ginger them to dance and let their hair down. A good choreography on stage is often a factor that infects show-goers to respond positively to an artiste.

Giving some technical pointers about what goes into a good show, George Quaye, a show producer with Charterhouse said an artiste’s entry and exit add a lot to the performance.

According to him, an artiste is able to keep the audience yearning for more with an effective entry and exit strategy.

One of the elements people always look out for at a Kojo Antwi show is how he gets onto the stage. At the Legends and Legacy show last November, he arrived in a chair pulled in by popular boxers, Bukom Banku and Ayittey Powers.

George Quaye stated that a musician’s outfit can go against him or her depending on the nature of the show.

Former editor of Graphic Showbiz, Nanabanyin Dadson who has produced lots of shows in the past including Miss Ghana, also said a good performer should be able to engage the audience and hold their attention while on stage.

According to him, an artiste’s movement on stage is also a key factor in whether the show goes well or not.

He explained that an artiste performing with a live band should be able to relate with the band in a way that would inspire the instrumentalists to put in their best

“Some years back, VIP and Praye always wowed the audience because they communicated well.  They were able to use the stage to their advantage, but some artistes are not able to do same.”

Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo, an entertainment critic, also told Showbiz that a good performer should have the energy and strategy to sustain a show for an hour or more and still remain relevant on stage.

He added that a musician with several hit songs is likely to have a good show due to prior familiarity with the repertoire by the audience.

As we get toward the end of the year, there will be lots of shows and audiences would definitely look out for thrilling performances wherever they go.
