Freedom Concert comes around again

This year’s Freedom Concert, the annual musical bash organised by Reflects Ghana Limited to help reignite the mass enthusiasm that greeted Independence Day in 1957, will be a two-part affair on March 5 and March 6 in Kumasi and Accra respectively.

Scheduled to perform at the two concerts are Shatta Wale, Samini, Tic Tac, Obrafour, Praye, Lil Win and more.

The first Freedom Concert event was held last year at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.  Turnout was high and Reflects Ghana’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Nathaniel Johnson, is optimistic there would be a bigger attendance this year.

He stated that the Kumasi concert earned his company a nomination in the Entertainment Company of the Year category in the 2015 City People Entertainment Awards held in Nigeria.

“More than 25,000 people were in the stadium last year and they were thoroughly entertained. We are pushing for about 40,000 at the same venue this year as we add a bit of an educational component to the programme,” Mr Johnson said.

The educational aspect he refers to is a short documentary film on the attainment of independence and remarks by prominent citizens on the theme of ‘Promoting Peace and Nationalism.’

The Accra event will be from midday to midnight at the La Pleasure Beach on March 6.

“Until recently, many Ghanaians all over the country waited for March 6 with enthusiasm.  Sadly, at a time when the nation needs more of such patriotism and commitment towards national development, people are divided over all sorts of issues and even think our independence has lost its purpose.

“The Freedom Concert series are meant to help bring back the sense of nationalism,” Mr Johnson said.
