AMVCA: Juliet, Shirley, others to make Ghana proud

Since 2013 when the concept was introduced to the continent, the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) has been among the most looked forward television related awards on the African continent.

Producers, directors and actors, among other television and film industry professionals have looked forward to this particular awards every year.

One of the reasons for this is the prestige that they assign to it and therefore willing to associate with it.

Last December, the list of nominees for the fourth in the series of the AMVCA were announced by Kenyan broadcaster, Larry Madowo and Nigerian comedienne Chigurl during a special live broadcast on all Africa Magic channels on DStv and GOtv.

The fourth edition of this prestigious pan-continental awards will take place in Lagos, Nigeria on March 4 and 5, 2016, which if you just got in town from Mars would be next week Friday and Saturday.

There were several big name film and television producers, directors, actors and other technicians from across the continent who got nominated for putting in good effort at what they do during the year being reviewed.

As usual, Ghana has not been left out in the nominations as some of their film and television professionals have had their works nominated. In all, there are eight Ghanaian nominees in contention for the awards in Lagos.

For the good work that she did in the year, with her movie, it is little wonder that Juliet Asante’s Silverain picked up three out of the eight nominations from Ghana while her former colleague, Shirley Frimpong-Manso also picked two nominations.

The Ghanaian nominations are Silverain - Best Movie, Silverain - Best Movie West Africa, Silverain - Best Costume Designer, Majid Michel- Best Actor in a Comedy, Van Vicker- Best Actor in a Comedy, Shirley Frimpong Manso - Best Director, Shirley Frimpong Manso - Best Editor, Nana Mensah - Best Actress in a Comedy.

It is important to note that in the catrories mentioned above, apart from the Best Director and Best Editor categories (which both have Shirley nominated) which will be decided by the academy, all the other categories will the decided through public voting.

During the call for entry late last year, the Regional Director for M-Net (West), Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu expressed her happiness that another year had come and that Africa Magic and Multichoice were putting together once again the AMVCA.

“We are pleased to announce the call to entry for the 2016 edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. At Africa Magic and MultiChoice, we have continued to show our support to the film and television industry across Africa even as we continue to provide world class entertainment for Africa by Africans.

There is still time enough to vote for the person or work you wish to win. The nominee that receives the most number of votes will win the award in that category, which means, the more you vote for your favourite nominees, the better their chance of winning.

To vote, go to http://amvca2016-awards.dstv.com/home and help someone to win.

So come next week, some of us will be in Lagos to try and see how in our small way can support those who have been nominated to win something for Ghana. It is always a very difficult place for us, but we need to go see how it would come this time.

The AMVCA’s celebrate the contribution of African filmmakers, actors and technicians to the success of the continent’s film and television industry and this year we hope the event would live up to its name and all will go on smoothly in Lagos.

Big league football and more now on dstv compact!

About two weeks ago when I went to the Multichoice office to pay my subscription, I almost wept when my bill was mentioned. I mean the football has to be watched and the children have to watch their channels and so as painful as it was, the bill had to be paid!

My thought processes were that there should be a way to have pay per view so I won’t have to pay so much for channels I won’t watch. Or alternatively, what about getting to watch football and the children also have their channels at about half what I was asked to pay?

Bingo! It seems Multichoice had already thought about this and were planning something. From last Tuesday, they decided to do something very daring for football lovers: make available two of the world’s best football leagues – the Barclays Premier League (EPL) and the Spanish La Liga – available to DStv Compact subscribers, at no extra cost. Along with that will be the upcoming Euro 2016 to take place in France. Magic!

“One of MultiChoice’s key priorities is to put our subscribers’ needs at the heart of everything we do and since these have been tough economic times for everyone, we realised that our subscribers could use some good news,” says Mr. Cecil Sunkwa-Mills, the General Manager of MultiChoice Ghana.

“We’re excited that we can now deliver the best football action in the world to our Compact subscribers while ensuring that this development doesn’t negatively impact them financially.”

According to a DStv statement, SuperSport launched two new sports channels, SuperSport 11 (DStv channel 211) and SuperSport 12 (DStv channel 212), which will be dedicated to showcasing the EPL and La Liga respectively on the DStv Compact bouquet.

This means that all Compact football fans will now be able to enjoy the biggest games of the season. Remember this Saturday 28 February my beloved Manchester United will lock horns with Arsenal in the English Premier League and that will be on SS11 or channel 211 on the Compact bouquet.
