Afua Asantewaa's medical team on why sing-a-thon ended after 126 hours

Afua Asantewaa’s sing-a-thon ended Friday morning at 126 hours and 52 minutes and the head of the medical team, Dr Grace Buckman has explained that the team ended the project following genuine health concerns.

Speaking to the media and patrons at the Akwaaba Village Friday morning, Dr Buckman said Afua Asantewaa's attempt of breaking the longest singing marathon by an individual is an inspiration to all.

“There’s only a point you can go as a person. She has done so well and we are extremely proud of her. We have gotten to a point that as a medical team, her health is very important. At the moment, we want her to rest so she will bounce back to us,” she said.

Explaining further, the medical team said her sleep deprivation in the last few days was affecting her body system and the signs were not too good for her total wellbeing.

They also disclosed that Afua started showing signs of mental stress by making unnecessary comments and gestures, something, which was medically expected and had been explained to her before the start of the competition.

Hence, to save her from any fatal heath conditions, the medical team pressed upon her to end it even though she was looking at ending it on Saturday or by midday Friday.

Her attempt, which is yet to be verified by Guinness World Record judges, went beyond the current record for the longest sing-a-thon held by India’s Sunil Waghmare in 2012.

Afua started the sing-a-thon on December 24 at exactly midnight and ended on the morning of Friday, December 29, 2023.
