Highlife or nothing for Kumi Guitar

He become popular during this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards  and there was hope that he was the next big thing to happen to the highlife music in Ghana but since then, not much has been heard of Kumi Guitar.

His silence has even triggered a suggestion in social media circles that Kumi’s highlife has succumbed to the current overwhelming audience preference for dancehall music.

But in an interview with Showbiz, Kumi Guitar, aka Nana Yaw Kumi denied that assertion saying that, he was not threatened by dancehall or any genre of music in town.

“Yes I have heard some comments like that but I am not perturbed by all these. I will not follow what I have no love and passion for. It is very surprising that people will put up such comments when they do not even have the slightest idea of what is going on behind the scenes.

“I will not change my mind and do any other genre of music because that is the latest craze in town. I believe that, I was made for highlife and that is what I will pursue to eternity. I will not follow the crowd and do what other people are doing,” he said.

“I believe that, there is time for everything and high life has a great future because it is ours. Many genres of music will come and pass but highlife will still remain. Azonto has had it time, Alkayida is also gradually fading but high life still stands and that is what I want to do,” he added.

Talking about why he had gone silent for such a long while, he said; “I am not in a rush to release songs that will not make hits. I believe in taking time to come up with songs. I do not want to be in a rush and do anything that will not make an impact. To me and my management, patience is a virtue.”

Currently being managed by producer Mark Okraku-Mantey, Kumi Guitar  said he was grateful to his parents for giving him the chance to pursue his dream. He has hit songs like, Break Into Two and Emaa Time.
