Originally a quartet, the group, led by James Varrick Armaah, a composer, arranger and organist, has blossomed into a full-fledged ensemble of voices and carved a niche for itself for its bold and creative experimentations.
One of the fruits of their experimentations is their partnership with the Salt and Light Ministry to institute the Evenings With Composers.
So far, they have had evenings with Yaw Sekyi Baidoo, Tsemafo Arthur, Ken Kafui, Acquaah-Harrison, Newlove Annan, James Ato Scott Bennin, J. G. Koomson, George Mensah Essilfie and James Varrick Armaah (himself).
When Harmonious Choral set out seven years ago, “to take choral music to the next level”, according to James Varrick Armaah, it aimed at equipping of each and every one of its members with the ability to read music. Seven years on, the group (every member) sings oratorios from the music score.
Harmonious, currently under the Board Chairmanship of Rev. Dr Joyce Aryee, has five albums, including the phenomenally successful OYE, an Armaah composition that gets everybody on their feet wherever and whenever it is sung or wherever the CD is played.
The choir’s latest album Odo Ben Nie features the silky voice of Nii Okai.
