Dancehall is not violence — KB Empire boss

Dancehall music has come to stay in Ghana and its “players” have worked hard to make the genre a sought after in music circles.

However, it seems its popularity has given birth to acts of violence among some artistes in the country.

C.E.O. of KB Empire, Kwabena Boateng (KB) believes the trend mustn’t be encouraged since the “violent trait is alien to the Ghanaian culture”.

Speaking with the Showbiz on Monday, KB said he had observed the violent nature of some dancehall artistes with the aim of promoting their brand as is done in Jamaica, the origin of Dancehall music.

“Dancehall is a popular type of music which originated in the late 70s and those who started it had to get attention for the genre so they devised such violent lifestyles. I don’t know why our people would want to emulate that because they are also championing dancehall music here,” he stated.

He said proper management in building and selling one’s brand should be the utmost interest of dancehall artistes and not insults and violent acts to ‘scare’ their rivals in the game.

“I’ve always had issues with how Shatta Wale shot to fame on his comeback. He was always on the run to devour anyone  who opposes his views and acts with insults. Surprisingly, he had people who supported him without condemning his acts. I know many young artistes who look up to him will learn from this uninspiring lifestyle of his,” he added.

In 2015, KB established his record label, KB Empire with the aim of unearthing artistes and also to groom them to become competitive in an industry that boasts of many unique talents.

He said the aim of his record label which female Afropop artiste, Afiba and Iyk Wonder are signed onto  is to sell African music beyond the shores of Africa and also give equal opportunity to young artistes who have been relegated to the background.
