Parties display beauty and maturity at NPP confab
A new era of growth and maturity is dawning on the country’s democratic environment. At least, that was the beautiful spectacle which took place last Saturday when a number of political parties thronged the venue for the annual delegates conference of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Cape Coast to support the NPP with goodwill messages.

As usual, political parties, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), the National Democratic Party (NDP), the People’s National Convention (PNC), among others, were at the NPP conference to display high levels of maturity as they took turns to deliver their felicitations.
Notwithstanding the tension and uncertainty that characterised the 2016 elections, it was really pleasing to see our various parties show warmth and affection towards one another at the conference.
The relatively congenial atmosphere that prevailed among the various parties must be maintained and sustained.
According to Daily Graphic reports, one theme which resonated in the messages from the NDC, the NDP, the PNC and the PPP was the need for collective responsibility towards advancing the gains made in building the nation’s democracy.
The occasion was not without humour when a Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mr Koku Anyidoho, mounted the podium to deliver the fraternity message on behalf of his party.
He began by singing the NDC’s victory song: ‘The victory of the NDC is coming again, and the people say, ehe dzor bodoo’. after which the packed hall spontaneously rose to their feet and responded “Away! Away! Away!”
After a few minutes of that humour, the house was called to order and business proceeded.
Today, it is the NPP, under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, which is in government. Some day, it will be the turn of another party and on and on we grow to strengthen and fortify multiparty democracy in Ghana.
After all, while the government of the NPP has the herculean task to meet the everyday needs of the people, the opposition political parties also have a collective responsibility to organise affairs in such a manner to ensure that good governance prevails.
As it is, political parties and politicians have the biggest say among all stakeholders in the governance process and what they do in government or in opposition goes a long way to impact positively or negatively on the well-being of the ordinary person.
The Fourth Republic has already seen 16 years of NDC rule and eight years and eight months of NPP rule and yet the country is confronted with many challenges. There is, therefore, the need for a collective resolve to propel the nation onto greater heights of economic growth.
Now that we are affirming our democracy to the global community, we cannot rest on our laurels but strive until Ghana wins its economic independence.
As a collective, we as Ghanaians must continue to remain peaceful and democratic to ensure that the seeds of democracy that have been sown germinate and grow to fruition.
It is time for all hands to be on deck for good governance systems to prevail.
