Give peace a chance

All efforts must be geared towards preserving the peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the country  because, after all, we are one people with a common destiny.

 Ghanaians must also bear in mind that in every competition, only one person can emerge victorious, after which both losers and winners must accept that as a fact and move on.

It is an undeniable fact that countries that have their national economics entangled in unending civil strife ended up that way as a result of the struggle for power, either through rigged polls or force.

Ensuring peace during and after the elections requires that all stakeholders, including the citizenry, the political parties, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies, the media and the Judiciary, play crucial roles.

The President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, has affirmed the government’s commitment to create the enabling environment for every qualified voter to cast his or her vote in an atmosphere of peace and without intimidation.

The President has, therefore, appealed to the  National Peace Council, the religious community and the National House of Chiefs to intensify their collaboration efforts towards attaining peace in the country during and after the December 7 polls.

The Daily Graphic finds this call very timely and refreshing, in view of the influence that these classes of Ghanaians exert on society. We also think this is very crucial, considering their great following.

Indeed, it is not for nothing that chiefs, for instance, with such an enormous control over the people, are prohibited by the Constitution from engaging in partisan political activities.

The Daily Graphic wishes to use this platform to urge everybody to play his or her role in ensuring peace and sustaining it. We also believe that the security agencies will remain vigilant to guarantee the peace that we are all yearning for.

 Ghana is our only country. We have nowhere to run to should we turn the country into a war front just because of our political differences.

The various political parties must drum the essence of maintaining peace into their supporters. The presidential candidates should also vow to accept the election results which will be announced by the Electoral Commission.

A word to the wise, they say, is enough.
