Ghana is 63:Bring back spirit of patriotism, nationalism

Sixty-three years in the life of any individual or institution is worth celebrating, because celebrating such momentous occasions help us not only to share our joy with others but also take stock of our achievements, failures and challenges and plan for better times ahead.

Therefore, as the country marks its 63rd independence anniversary, the Daily Graphic shares with our kith and kin the joy of commemorating our Independence Day.

At least, if for nothing at all, our Fourth Republican dispensation has come far, with its attendant stability and peace. No doubt, Ghana has become a beacon of peace and democracy on the African continent.

But, in all these, the Daily Graphic acknowledges the challenges we face as a country. For instance, successive governments have battled and continue to battle the problem of sanitation and access to health services, while indiscipline remains an albatross around our necks.

Another sad blot on our nationhood is the politicisation of every activity or event.

The Daily Graphic believes that having come thus far, we should have overcome some of these challenges.

But our greatest worry and concern is the loss of our sense of nationalism and patriotism. The spirit of ‘I don’t care’ and ‘it is up to the government or them’ is destroying the country.

Few seem to care about events or activities taking place around them. Many of us are also looking up to the government and politicians to provide all we need, including cleaning our surroundings and providing our basic needs.

The Daily Graphic thinks that our politicians and duty bearers have greatly contributed to this mess in which we find ourselves. Politicians have always promised heaven to the electorate during electioneering, including promises to pay fees, offer employment, economic prosperity and good livelihood.

We all think about ourselves first, our families, our communities and, lastly, the country. But we forget that we all make up the nation and it is only we who can bring the country out of the woods. We cannot sit aloof and expect that things must be done for us to enjoy.

The Daily Graphic wishes to remind Ghanaians, particularly the youth, that our forefathers sacrificed a great deal to bring this country this far.

Serving our country selflessly in every facet of our national life should be the greatest goal of every Ghanaian. We must emulate our forefathers’ selfless services to humanity in order to deal with the current challenges confronting this country.

This will require that we change our mindset and mentality towards this country.

The Daily Graphic wishes all Ghanaians a happy Independence anniversary.
