Fresh Breeze and some level of cleanliness have been restored at Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra, after an intensive one month special sanitation project launched by Zoom Alliance in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD).
After one week of intensive cleaning and evacuation exercise carried out in the selected areas including Agbogbloshie, choked gutters have now been cleared, paving way for free flow of sewage and also bringing some fresh breeze to the area.
A visit to the Agbogbloshie and Odorkor communities last Saturday to inspect the progress of work, revealed that most of the choked drains at Agbogbloshie and the heaped refuse at Odorkor Market have been cleared.
Last week, Zoom Alliance and MLGRD launched a one-month intensive sanitation project to clear some selected areas within the Accra metropolis of heaped refuse and choked gutters.
Speaking to journalists at Agbogbloshie after the inspection exercise, the Managing Director of Zoom Alliance, Agyenim Boateng Adjei, expressed the hope that residents of the various selected areas for the project would adopt the exercise and keep their environs clean.
Mr Adjei stated that with enough human resource, right attitude and logistics, the country could be cleared of the current filth and communicable diseases.
He added that after the exercise, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly was expected to take over the project and ensure that the places are kept clean and the assembly was expected to enforce by-laws to help change people’s attitude towards sanitation.
The managing director reiterated the need for continuous public education, sensitisation and the strict enforcement of the law, and noted that with these, “I believe we shall have cleaned environment, cleaned gutters and a healthy environment.”
According to him, every government is interested in saving its citizens from unhealthy life style rather than spending money to cure communicable diseases in the country.
Mr Adjei said they were currently working at Makola and Dome markets, Bualeshie, Tema Station, and Paraku Estates as part of the areas selected for the exercise.
