The Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing is negotiating with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) for the reactivation of the abandoned affordable housing project.
The project, consisting of over 4,700 housing units across the nation, was initiated under the Kufuor administration but work stalled due to lack of funds.
Negotiations between the ministry and SSNIT involve the funding for the final phase of the project.
The housing units are being constructed at Nungua Borteyman and Kpone in the Greater Accra Region; Asokore-Mampong in the Ashanti Region; Koforidua in the Eastern Region; Wa in the Upper Wast Region and Tamale in the Northern Region.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra, the Public Relations Officer of the ministry, Mr Abraham Otabil, said the ministry was collaborating with SSNIT to ensure that the housing units were completed.
He explained that the project was initially funded by SSNIT but after the ministry had run out of funds, it resorted to HIPC funds, which also ran out.
Mr Otabil stated that SSNIT was capable of facilitating the project, which was almost 85 per cent complete.
Work on the project, he said, would start as soon as negotiations and deliberations between the two bodies were over.
After the deliberations, he said, it would take less than six months for the project to be completed.
He added that institutions such as the Tema Development Corporation, the State Housing Company (SHC) and the Ghana Armed Forces had been given some of the housing units to complete.
For instance, he said, the SHC was currently handling about five units of the Nungua Borteyman project, while the TDC was working on some of the Kpone houses.
