A young man who posed as a journalist at a Ghana AIDS Commission event in Accra has been arrested for allegedly stealing an ipad belonging to a participant.
The suspect, Arkoh Frimpong Oware, 24, claiming to work with an Adabraka-based radio station in Accra, allegedly stole the Ipad when its owner, Ms Michel Sarfowaa Dwomoh, had left it in an electrical plug to charge.
When he realised that nobody was watching him, Oware reportedly unplugged the ipad and took it away.
The Osu District Police Commander, Superintendent Kwesi Annor Arhin, told the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday that the owner of the ipad had stepped out of the conference room, while the ipad was being charged, close to where Oware was seated.
Upon her return to the conference room of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, he said, Ms Dwomoh detected that her gadget was missing and subsequently raised an alarm.
Mr Arhin said it was then detected that the suspect had also vanished from the vicinity of the conference.
According to him, a journalist, who had Oware’s telephone number, called to find out his whereabouts.
He said Oware allegedly admitted being in possession of the Ipad and claimed that he was within the vicinity.
Mr Arhin said although the suspect promised returning the Ipad, he never showed up.
Accordingly, the case was reported to the Osu police, who continued with investigations after the September 10 to 13, 2013 national HIV and AIDS research conference.
The police chief said, eventually, the suspect was lured to the Accra Mall on September 18, 2013, by a journalist to cover an event.
He said the suspect was arrested as soon as he showed up.
