The Domestic Services Workers Union (DSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has called on the government to ratify the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) convention on decent work.
Addressing the media in Accra, the Local Secretary of the Koforidua branch of the union, Miss Bernice Mawuli, said although the union had benefitted from the government in the past, it was still confronted with many challenges that needed urgent government intervention.
“We recognise and commend the government for developing the draft Labour (Domestic Workers) Regulation 2019 and adopting the ILO Convention on the elimination of violence and harassment in the world of work,” she said.
The call
Miss Mawuli appealed to the government to ratify the ILO Convention on decent work for domestic workers that was adopted in June 2019 at the International Labour Conference in Geneva.
“The union also looks forward to the government speeding up the process to enact the Labour Domestic Workers Regulation 2019 in accordance with the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) and to ratify the International Labour Convention 190 on elimination of violence and harassment in the world of work,” she added.
Other matters
The Chairperson of the Union, Miss Eva Attakrah, enumerated some of the achievements of the union to include talks and seminars to sensitise its members to how to appropriately handle problems at their workplaces.
She said the union had formed a “Young Urban Women’s Movement” to deal with economic and sexual exploitation of young ladies in the urban areas.
The movement, made up of about 1,000 women and men in Accra, Takoradi, Cape Coast and Koforidua, also educates young ladies on reproductive health issues.
