Ghana will be represented by a high-level delegation at the 2013 Africa Regional Population Conference on the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Beyond 2014 Review.
The conference is being hosted by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) from September 30 to October 4, 2013 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and has the theme, “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend: The Africa we want to see”.
The delegation consists of Directors of Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (PPME) Division of relevant ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs); parliamentarians, academia, civil society organisations (CSOs), the youth, media and technical experts.
A statement from the Ghana country office of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which was also signed by the Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission, Dr Regina O. Adutwum, said the outcome of the conference would be input into Africa’s post-2015 Millennium Development Goals ( MDG) consultations.
It explained that the selection of members of the delegation targetted Directors of PPME of MDAs in furtherance of the commitment of the NDPC to integrate the recommendations of the ICPD report into national development plans.
Twenty years after the ICPD, during which the international community approved a programme of action (PoA) to address population and sustainable development issues, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in co-operation with the UN system and other relevant organisations carried out an operational review of the implementation to document the progress and achievements of the implementation of the PoA in Africa.
Governments were also tasked to review their achievements and the constraints they faced in the implementation. The NDPC co-ordinated the review in Ghana.
