An eight-year old boy met his untimely death when he fell into his school’s pit latrine in Nima, last Tuesday.
The class three pupil of the Greater Care International School, Kamel Bashiru, reportedly fell into the pit latrine at about 12 noon on Tuesday.
It took three hours for the body to be retrieved from the pit latrine.
A cleaner of the school allegedly found the boy’s clothes hanging on the door to the toilet and raised an alarm.
It is, however, unclear why the incident was not reported to the police as a friend to the headmistress, Mr Samuel Etse, claimed that the boy’s parents did not agree for the case to be reported to the police.
He told the Daily Graphic that the boy’s parents claimed reporting the matter to the police would be a waste of time.
The boy’s mother, Miss Humul Hairi Bashir, said that she was home yesterday when she received a call that her son was found in his school’s pit latrine.
She said the teachers had initially told her the boy had fallen on the ground and had been rushed to the Mamobi Polyclinic.
“I went out to buy books when I was informed that my son only fell on the ground and I should not panic,” she said.
On why the incident had not been reported to the police, she said the school authorities should have done so but had refised to do so for fear of being arrested.
Mr Abdulai Kensi, a resident also told the Daily Graphic that the school authorities could not report the issue to the police for fear that the school would be closed down.
