The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has reconnected power to the offices of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), four days after the assembly was taken off the national grid for failure to pay its bills totalling GH¢56,000. That followed the payment of GH¢20,000 of the accumulated bills to the ECG last Wednesday.
When the Daily Graphic visited the offices of the KMA yesterday afternoon, activities were going on without any interruption.
Officials at the ECG confirmed the receipt of the part payment and said the company could have rejected it but for the fact that it wanted to see the business of the assembly running.
“We are all partners in the development of Kumasi in particular and Ghana in general and so we decided to accept the part payment,” Mr Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, the ECG Ashanti Regional Public Affairs Manager, told the Daily Graphic.
He was, however, confident that the assembly would do well to settle the balance of GH¢36,000 to avoid a recurrence of the situation.
Mr Baidoo also stressed the need for other establishments that owed the ECG to pay up or risk disconnection.
He said the ECG could not sit down for its customers to take the company for a ride.
The ECG, last Friday, disconnected power to the KMA after the assembly was said to have refused to pay its 24-month bill.
The action did not go down well with the KMA, which insisted that it might also take action against the ECG for failing to honour the payment of its property rate to the assembly, totalling about GH¢120,000.
According to the KMA, it had wanted the ECG to use part of the amount the company owed the assembly to offset the electricity bills, but the company refused.
