Tigo has provided the residents of Ahabaso, a farming community in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region, with solar panels that will help provide them with power for their businesses and domestic use.
The Chief Executive Officer of Tigo Ghana, Ms Roshi Motman, said the company first came into contact with the community through ‘My Tigo Teacher,’ an initiative where staff volunteer to teach in rural schools across the country.
“We visited the school to teach the pupils and realised they were unable to study beyond 6:00 pm because the community was not connected to the national grid. Tigo Ghana left with the resolve to rectify this, hence the provision of solar panels to guarantee power supply especially in the evenings,” she said.
She said Tigo would intensify its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives to empower and develop more communities. “Our goal is to make a meaningful contribution towards improved living standards like we have done here in this community,” she explained.
The Member of Parliament for Upper Manya Krobo constituency, Mr Jeff Tetteh Kavianu, was grateful for the support and urged other corporate organisations to help develop rural Ghana and support government’s efforts to provide basic infrastructure.
The District Chief Executive for Upper Manya Krobo, Mr Joseph Tetteh Angmor, appealed to Tigo and other institutions to help the community to rehabilitate its school building.
The off-grid power system is a cost-efficient means of power generation which requires very little maintenance and has a life span of about 10 years.
