Six schools in quarter finals of Tertiary Business Sense Challenge

Six public tertiary institutions have progressed to the quarter final stage of the second edition of the Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC).

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University for Development Studies (UDS), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) managed to secure their slots after winning their respective contests at Stage 2 of the highly competitive contest.

The University of Professional Studies (UPSA), which is the sixth school to qualify, had the opportunity to come back into the contest after becoming the losing school with the highest score.

The contest, which is to test the business knowledge of tertiary students and how they can apply what they learn in school, started off with 19 schools from both private and public institutions across the country.

At the end of the preliminary round, only one private institution —the Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) — progressed to the stage two but failed to progress to the quarter finals.

The quarter final promises to be an exciting contest as the institutions that have qualified are poised to battle it out keenly to see who wins the second edition of the challenge.

Final Stage 2 contest

The final stage 2 contest for the day started with the UCC coming up against the Kumasi Technical University (KTU).

Although the KTU had proven its competence in the preceding contests in the second edition, UCC (the defending champions) proved to be a stronger force for them to contend with.

Right from the start of the contest, the defending champions exhibited their dominance, proving that they were ready to maintain and defend their title.

At the end of the fifth round, UCC progressed with 66 points while KTU managed to score 25 points.

The second contest of the day was between the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) and the Accra Technical University (ATU).

The UGBS once again showed their supremacy as the premier university. The contestants were determined to join the league of schools at the quarter finals.

At the end of the contest, UGBS became the 5th school to qualify with 76 points, while ATU garnered 32 points.

The UGBS score of 76 is the highest in the contest this year, living up to its reputation of being the premier university.

A representative of the UGBS, Mr Owen Odonkor Adantey, told the Daily Graphic that the team set a high target for itself to score 80 but it managed to score 76.

That notwithstanding, the team, he said, was poised to go to the next stage better prepared.

“The job is not done. We are going back to prepare and come back better. One day at a time, one contest at a time,” he said.

The contest

The TBSC is an initiative of the Graphic Business aimed at developing the cognitive growth of business students to build successful business careers in the future.

It is being held on the theme: “Developing Business Minds – The Hot Seat.”

The maiden edition, held last year, brought together students from tertiary business schools to test their knowledge in various aspects of business courses.

The University of Cape Coast emerged winner of the maiden edition.
