Phoenix Insurance supports UG
Phoenix Insurance Company Limited, a subsidiary of the CDH Group, has donated GH¢ 100,000 to the endowment fund of the University of Ghana.

The amount was part of a GH¢ 250,000 pledge made by the company.
The Managing Director of Phoenix Insurance, Mr Henry Bukari, said the donation was to help the university in its plans to expand infrastructure to accommodate the expected increase in the number of university students, with the introduction of the Free Senior High School (SHS) Policy and also help provide for brilliant but needy students.
He said the gesture also formed part of the company’s efforts to support the governments’ commitment to improve the quality of the country’s education and human resource.
The Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Rev. Prof. Patrick F. Ayeh-Kumi, commended the company for being true to its word.
Absorbing SHS graduates
The CEO of the CDH Group, Mr Emmanuel Adu-Sarkodee, also called on universities and other tertiary institutions to start planning how to absorb the high number of SHS graduates in the next three years.
He said whereas the Free SHS was a good policy, it also threatened to put tremendous pressure on the universities and other tertiary institutions if a comprehensive plan was not put in place.
“If we do not strategise now, it will become another mountain to climb in three years time,” he stated.
Detailed plan
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, also expressed his gratitude to the company, stating that supporting needy students was a capital investment in the nation as the donation would serve the critical needs of the students.
He also indicated that the Ministry of Education had tasked all tertiary institutions to come up with detailed plans on how to absorb SHS graduates in the next three years.
He said on its part, the University of Ghana had already started receiving detailed plans from the various faculties on how they were preparing for the huge numbers in three years time.
He pointed out that the focus would be on how to improve on residential and classroom facilities and also how to get more lecturers to ensure the teacher-student contact was not compromised.
